The School of Biomedical Engineering at ShanghaiTech University targets world-class biomedical engineering research and education. We are dedicated to establishing the highest-quality team of faculty with professionalism, vision, energy, and potential. Introduction to the Dean

Professor Dinggang Shen (IEEE Fellow, AIMBE Fellow, IAPR Fellow and MICCAI Fellow) is the Founding Dean of the School of Biomedical Engineering at ShanghaiTech University. Before joining ShanghaiTech, he was a tenured Professor of Radiology, Biomedical Research Imaging Center (BRIC), Computer Science, and Biomedical Engineering at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), USA. He was also the Director of faculty development in the Department of Radiology, Director of Imaging Information Center, Director of IDEA lab, and Director of Image Analysis Core of BRIC at UNC. He is the Co-CEO of Shanghai United Imaging Intelligence Co., Ltd. He has published more than 1,100 papers, with an h-index of 107 and more than 45,000 citations. He serves in editorial boards of eight international journals, and also served as the General Chair of MICCAI 2019.

Professor Shen has been involved in the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning in medical image computing for a long time, including early brain development, early diagnosis, and the prediction of Alzheimer's disease, as well as diagnosis, prognosis and radiotherapy of brain tumor, breast cancer and prostate cancer. He is a pioneering scientist carrying out imaging AI research all over the world and is one of the first to apply deep learning to medical imaging (2012).

School of Biomedical Engineering: Mission and Vision

Major Planning

At the initial stage of its establishment, the BME school will focus on medical imaging, intelligent medicine, and smart biomedical instruments. Then, the research scope will gradually expand to cover all major directions in the field of biomedical engineering interdisciplinary, such as biomaterials, neural engineering, and genetic engineering.

Student Development

Each student will be assigned with a tutor who is a full-time faculty member. The tutor will help provide feedback and advice for his/her academic progress. The faculty members in our school conduct cutting-edge biomedical research and maintain high reputations in the academic field; therefore, the students will be given access to the latest advances in the field of biomedical engineering through his/her tutor. We will also provide engaging and challenging courses to undergraduate and graduate students. Meanwhile, we will pay special attention to helping cultivate students' international vision, team spirit, leadership, innovation ability, and entrepreneurship.
